Service Day April 24th

In recognition of the Pope Benedict XVI's birthday and visit to the United States, the Newman students are committed to doing over 820 service hours this day.

Congratulations to Faculty, Staff, Parents, and Supporters of the Newman Catholic School System!  You made it happen!

The Des Moines Register released information showing how student performed at the three reagent schools (Iowa, ISU, And UNI).  The article featured small schools in Iowa in regards to academics.  Newman students were listed in the top 10% for GPA their freshman year compared to other students.  Our students were also listed in the top 10% when looking at rigorous courses such as Math, English, and Science.  Thanks to your dedication you made this happen.   Thank you.

Congratulations to Julia Gales.

Julia qualified to compete in the Iowa National Geographic Bee at Drake University in Des Moines.  Statewide, 100 children in seventh and eighth grade earned trips to the state contest.  This is a great achievement by Julia.  Congratulations Julia!

Washington D.C. Trip
On Friday, March 21, 2008 34 eighth grade students and 22 chaperones left for Gettysburg and Washington, DC.  Traveling with Hawkeye Stages we arrived in Gettysburg on Saturday morning after driving through rain, sleet, and snow.  The day was spent seeing the farm of President and Mrs. Eisenhower, the battlefields, enjoying a evening meal at the Dobbin House, and finishing the day with swimming at the Eisenhower Inn.  Sunday, Easter, saw all of the group attending mass at St. Francis at 7 A.M., followed by Don Markel sharing about the church's history, brunch at the Eisenhower, packing up and heading to Washington, D.C.  Arriving at Arlington National Cemetery the group was able to visit the Arlington House, the home of Robert E. Lee, the Kennedy graves, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  There four Newman students, Emily Beltran, Chandler Rognes, Kevin Blinkmann, and Jessica Balek, had the honor of laying a wreath at the tomb.  Leaving Arlington the group enjoyed a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe, celebrating three birthdays.  Before checking into the Comfort Inn we did some sight seeing of memorials.  Monday brought the opportunity for the group to visit the National Archives, Washington Monument, Holocaust Museum, and the National Cathedral.  The evening meal was enjoyed at Union Station.  Tuesday the group was at the White House at 7:30, then in their small groups took the opportunity to visit the Peterson House, the home where President Lincoln died, the Natural History Museum, the Space and Aeronautics Museum, the Native American Museum and other sites.  By 1:30 the group was back together and going into the Capital.  Many thanks go to Elizabeth Gordon, of Representative Tom Latham's office.  She is very helpful in making it possible for us to visit the White House and Congress.  More sight seeing to the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress followed for some who were not to tired.  The evening was then spent at Toby's Dinner Theater where the group enjoyed an excellent buffet and the musical, Joseph.  Wednesday brought the group to the Pentagon, then to Mt. Vernon, where they enjoyed a delightful lunch.  Next the group visited Christ Church, the church that both George Washington and Robert E. Lee attended.  Then the small groups had an opportunity to explore Old Alexandria before pizza at Bugsy's.  While students and chaperones explored, some chaperones delivered the quilts, toothpaste and toothbrushes for the wounded soldiers project.  The evening was capped off with a cruise up the Potomac from Alexandria to Georgetown and back.  On Thursday everyone packed up and headed to the bus.  Our first stop was at Sommerset, PA at the offices where they are planning the Flight 93 Memorial National Park.  After lunch we visited the offices, then went out to the crash site and left a Newman banner with all the students and chaperones names on it.  Heading back to Iowa we again experienced rain, sleet, and snow.  Because of the excellent skills of Hawkeye Stages' drivers, we arrived home at about 7:30 A.M. Friday morning.  It was an awesome trip and we would like to thank all of those who helped make it such a wonderful learning experience.
